When you have a problem that is so severe and debilitating enough to warrant surgery, you want that surgery to be successful. That means a prompt, complication-free and complete recovery!
When you make the commitment of time, money, inconvenience and risk that comes with undergoing surgery (there’s always some risk with even “simple” surgeries), you want aftercare that will bring about a prompt, complication-free and complete recovery.
Once the surgeons have done their job, there is still a great deal more for the patient to do in order to return to normal function. Also, to do the wrong things can undo the surgeon’s good work.
At South Aiken Physical Therapy we treat a LOT of surgical patients and have committed to being knowledgeable in orthopedic procedures, post-surgical precautions and the best exercises and methods to bring about optimum results.
We frequently will see people pre-surgery to optimally prepare them for an easier recovery and in some cases to try and avoid surgery. We have definitely had some success here. Even if surgery is inevitable, very often people have related problems that will not be fixed in surgery and will impair recovery. A common example is in the case of knee replacements; many people have significant hip weakness that is causing increased stress to the knee and less stability in walking. If the hip is not strengthened pre-surgery, then when you begin walking (within 24 hours of surgery), you are trying to do so on the same weak muscles that made you unsteady and stressed the knee joint presurgically. A good examination and home-based program can make the post-operative recovery that much easier and more successful.
Ask your doctor if he or she thinks a pre-surgery program is right for you.

How long before benefits are realized?
Different surgeries take different lengths of time to recover. There are fairly predictable timelines for partial and complete recovery. With good care such as offered at South Aiken Physical Therapy, you should meet those mini-goals and find the doctor pleased with progress at your follow-ups. Your knowledgeable therapist should be able to give you detailed recovery timelines.
Be Wary Of…
… Therapists that can’t thoroughly and confidently answer your questions about the recovery process.
… Therapists that are not “hands-on”. A post-surgery case typically needs skilled hands to mobilize the joint and soft tissue. Those that are not skilled or confident with this will avoid it and your recovery is then compromised.
… Doing exercises post-surgery that are painful. Typically you should be working within your capabilities. This might mean some discomfort, but true pain is usually not the norm.
