Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a technique used for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The therapist uses a “dry” needle (one without medication or injection) inserted through the skin into the muscle and works directly on the painful trigger points in the muscles. The needles are very thin (the width of a human hair), and the placement breaks the pain/spasm/dysfunction cycle. Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists; it is a part of modern Western medicine principles, and supported by research.

What to Expect:

Dry needling can cause minor soreness for a day or so but is usually not painful. Many patients feel immediate relief with treatment.

At South Aiken Physical Therapy and Wellness, we recommend incorporating dry needling into a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan. We know our patients and clients who receive a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation, manual therapy, exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and other therapeutic exercises and interventions get the best results. However, for those who prefer dry needling only, that is an option.

Dry Needling Can Be Effective For:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain/headache
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Jaw (TMJ) pain
  • Hip pain
  • Heel pain
  • Elbow pain and Epicondylitis
  • and so much more!
